Identified by its hardness and distinct hexagonal crystals (6 sided crystals), Aquamarine is found in pegmatites--igneous rocks which cooled slowly, allowing large crystals to form.

Found all over the world, principle sites include Brazil, Russia, Uruguay and Arizona. Hardness: 8 on the Moh's Hardness Scale

Buyer Beware! Heat treating the gem can increase the blueness, though thought to reduce the mystical effects of the stone. Synthetic aquamarines are often spinels (white sapphires) treated with cobalt to create the blueness.
