Diamond JewelryDiamond Jewelry

Diamond is one of the four precious gemstones. An estimated 50 tons of rock must be mined to produce a one carat gem quality diamond (only 20% of diamonds are gem quality). This is the hardest natural substance known to man--about 150 times harder than its nearest competitor.
Mystical Properties: Diamonds have been used as crown jewels for centuries--many of the European Crown Jewels were taken from India.

The gem is said to be an amplifier. If the wearer is good, it amplifies their goodness. If the wearer is selfish, egotistical or evil, it will amplify those qualities as well.

Many fearful legends surround the largest diamonds, for instance the Hope Diamond. Thought to have been stolen from an Indian idol, it became part of the French crown jewels of Louis XIV. He gave it to his mistress, who died soon afterward. Later, it was given to Marie Antoinette (guillotined), then in 1830 purchased by Hope, a wealthy Englishman, who quickly fell upon hard times. Next it was owned by Colet (suicide), Prince Ivan Kanitovitsky (murdered), Sultan Abdul Hamed (dethroned), Simon Montharides (entire family killed in accident). By 1907 an American woman purchased the gem (her husband, son and daughter all died soon after). Now the unlucky gem resides in the Smithsonian.

To Westerners, Diamond engagement rings symbolize eternal love, however, in India, the Vedic's believe diamonds should never be given to a woman--for its cold hardness is said to be absorbed into the woman, making her cold and hard toward her husband and children. They also believe diamonds to be "amplifiers" and no woman should wear more than 1 carat total weight of diamonds, and then, only in accent to other stones. They believe the stone's power is directly proportional to its size. Any diamond showing hints or tinges of red is said to bring ruin upon the wearer and his household.

Western Astrology associates diamonds with Aries, whereas Jewelers assign diamonds to the April birthstone. In Eastern Astrology, diamonds are associated with Venus who rules both Taurus and Libra.

Said to favor men named Dorian and women named Dorcas.

The guardian angel associated with diamonds is Ashmodei.

Diamonds are the traditional gift for the 75th Wedding Anniversary.

Dreaming of diamonds is said to guarantee victory over ones enemies.

Diamonds are the national stones of England, Holland, and South Africa and thought beneficial to those of English, Dutch and South African descent.

Said to govern the hour of noon.

Healing Properties: Mary, Queen of Scots had a large diamond she thought protected her from poisoning (she was beheaded). Alternately there are treatises that speak of its ability to poison.

Scientific Properties: Diamond is pure elemental Carbon, created deep within the earth's crust at enormous pressures and temperatures. Because of these high temperatures and pressures, diamonds have resisted laboratory creation until very recently.

Found most commonly in South African kimberlite "plugs" (welling up of extremely deep parts of the earth). Found in South Africa, Arkansas, California. Hardness: 10 on the Moh's Hardness Scale

Buyer Beware! Diamonds do scratch glass, but so do many other gems! The cost of diamonds have created a large number of imitators, the most common today, being Cubic Zirconium. White sapphires, clear spinels, quartz, white corundum (all of which scratch glass) have been substituted for diamonds. Artificial gems, not really diamonds, but attempts to reproduce at least some of the diamond's characteristic hardness are: Linobate, Yttralox, Strontium Titanate (called variously Brilliante, Lustigem, Wellington Diamond, Jewelite and Zenithite). How do you know if you're getting a real diamond? Always buy from a reputable company. If you're making a large purchase, it's a good idea to require a certificate of authentication by a GIA (Gemological Institute of America) certified professional.
