Scientific Properties: Composed of Calcium Chromium Silicate, the stone gets it green coloration from Chromium and/or Vanadium. Garnet may occur as crusts, crystals or massive deposits. Garnet is generally identified in the field by its characteristic cubic hexoctahedral or dodecahedral crystals.
The precious Tsavorite Garnet is very, very rare over 1 carat, though a few gems have been discovered above 5 carats. Tsavorite Garnet is a rich green, as in an emerald, but has a higher refractive index (brighter) and is generally not as plagued with inclusions as Emeralds.
Garnet is really a family of stones: Pyrope ( generally the blood red variety), Almandine (Orangey-red to Brown), Andradite (Brown, Black and sometimes Yellowish-green to Yellowish orange), Grossular (Clear, Orange, Pink, Yellow, Green, Brown), Spessartine (Yellowish Orange), and Uvarovites (Olive Green), Tsavorites (Deep Emerald Green to Yellowish Green), Rhodolite (Purplish red to red), Hessonite (Yellow orange to red).
Important localities include Tanzania and Russia. Hardness: 6.0 - 7.5 on the Moh's Hardness Scale
