** Information on this Gemstone **
Mystical Properties: Jadeite is universally thought to bring good fortune and longevity by an amazing array of cultures--which seemed to agree, in general, on Jadeite's mystical properties.
A major deposit of Jadeite is found in Guatemala and to the ancient American civilizations (Aztec, Maya, Olmec), the gemstone was considered so important and magical, only royalty could possess it. It was also said to instill protection.
Wearing Jadeite Jewelry is considered important for those who require Luck, such as those who earn their living as speculators. Thought to especially favor horses.
The Chinese superstitions and legends abound around Jade. Jade butterflies symbolize love to a bride on her wedding day, a phoenix is often given to young girls coming of age, whereas a jade padlock is given to children to protect them from all danger--basically locking them into life.
An especially tough stone, the clear sound of Jade being struck is very beautiful. The Chinese thought it symbolized the five highest virtues: benignity, lucidity, resonance, immutability and purity.
Green Jadeite is considered an important gemstone of the Heart Chakra, or 4th Chakra and is thought to help move us through intense grief by the use of wailing (keening). Also considered important for relationships which require wisdom, cooperation and luck.
Almost all green gemstones are thought to have healing properties, but Green Jadeite is considered one of the more powerful.
Not only ancient Americans associated Jadeite with royalty--the Chinese also associated the gemstone with the ruling class.
Healing Properties: Often said to ensure a long, lucky life. Ancient Americans and Europeans both attributed the ability to cure kidney problems to this gemstone. It is sometimes said to help eye problems. An amulet is said to protect a woman in childbirth.
Scientific Properties: Jadeite can be one of two minerals, Jadeite (Sodium Aluminum Silicate) or Nephrite Jade (Calcium Magnesium Iron Silicate).
How to tell the two apart? Visually, Nephrite Jade usually appears somewhat fibrous and is a deeper, richer green and will often have black spots. Jadeite is typically more transluscent than Nephrite Jade and sometimes more neon colored. Jadeite is also harder than Nephrite Jade. Most modern day Jadeite comes from Burma and Guatemala. Hardness: 6.5 to 7 on the Moh's Hardness Scale.
Buyer Beware! Because of the rarity of true Jadeite, many gemstones are marketed as New Jade. In general, the jewelry and gemstones on the market today called New Jade are really Serpentine, a less expensive green gemstone--so be sure to ASK if you're in the market for the real thing. And? If your purchase isn't somewhat expensive, be wary.
