Caring for Your Jewelry (T-Z)

We repeatedly get asked about cleaning Jewelry, so here are some helpful hints about cleaning your Natural Gemstone and Sterling Silver Jewelry. When in doubt about the authenticity or treatments applied to any gemstone, please take your piece to a Professional Jeweler!
1) Silver Tarnishes to a black substance called Silver Sulfide and it can get on your hands, your clothes, etc. So prepare a work area for yourself before you begin to clean.

2) We recommend a Sunshine ® Polishing Cloth to brighten up your Jewelry. Silver is quite soft and can be easily scratched with a fingernail, so be sure to remove any dust or dirt and clean your piece gently!.

3) How can you prevent the Silver from Tarnishing? All of our jewelry is sent in little Ziploc Baggies. Keep your Sterling Silver Jewelry bright between wearings by keeping it stored in the baggie.

Stone Durability Rarity Cleaning Recommendations
Tanzanite More fragile than most precious gemstones, this gemstone should be protected from extreme heat and long exposure to water. Quite rare and expensive. Sunshine Cloth
Tiger Eye Relatively durable Quartz based gemstone. Common. Sunshine Cloth
Tiger Iron Somewhat fragile as contains Hematite, which is relatively soft and will rust if left in water for extended periods of time. Somewhat rare combination of colorful Hematite, Red Jasper and Yellow Tiger Eye. Mined in Australia. Sunshine Cloth
Topaz Quite durable, Topaz has a hardness of 8 on a scale of 10, however, as with most very hard gemstones, they are brittle, so can be chipped with rough handling. Rare. The best grade is Imperial Topaz (a golden color). Often irradiated to improve the coloration, beware of very bright colorations if you're looking for a natural gemstone. Sunshine Cloth
Tourmaline Relatively durable. Rare, colorful and expensive (and getting more so). Sunshine Cloth
Tourmilated Quartz Relatively durable Quartz based gemstone. Rare geologically. This gemstone has come onto the market from China and is artificially inexpensive. We believe a nice, high grade piece of this is likely to appreciate in value. Sunshine Cloth
Tree Agate Relatively durable Quartz based gemstone. Common. Sunshine Cloth
Turitella (Fossil Jasper) This is generally quite soft and should be protected from heat and water. This is fossilized ancient underwater forests (crinoids) in the Chinese variety. Exceedingly inexpensive right now--may become rarer one day. Sunshine Cloth
Turquoise Somewhat fragile and porous, Turquoise will eventually dry out and turn green. Often treated with a fine resin (stabilized) to keep it from drying out, turning green and crumbling. Keep from heat and direct sunlight which will dry out and fade the gemstone. Most Turquoise will eventually turn green, but you can delay it by keeping it in a cool dark place between wearings. Rare and getting rarer, especially from the Southwest US mines (of which only about 25% are still open). One of the most faked of all gemstones! If you're not paying alot for Turquoise, you can bet it's either another stone dyed to look like Turquoise (they'll usually say things like "don't wear it in the shower", knowing the dye will wash off!) OR it may be Chalk Turquoise, or Turquoise ground up, mixed with dye and reconstituted into a bead. It generally has the appearance of a very evenly colored, high grade of Turquoise. It's definately the best fake, but buyer beware! If it's not wickedly expensive, it's likely NOT the naturally occuring stuff. Sunshine Cloth
Unakite A feldspar, this is a relatively durable gemstone, however protect from excessive heat and long-term exposure to water. Somewhat common. Sunshine Cloth
Zebra Stone Relatively durable, this is a metamorphic sandstone, hence the banding. Somewhat common Sunshine Cloth
Zircon A durable gemstone used to cheaply imitate diamonds. Commonly synthesized in the Lab, natural Zircon is highly prized in the Red and Blue varieties. Sunshine Cloth
