Larimar Jewelry

Larimar is the name for gem grade Pectolite, a secondary mineral created over thousands or millions of years as water flowed through volcanic rocks. Pectolite/Larimar will almost always have some mottling. Pectolite comes in many colors, however, the very highly prized and exceedingly RARE turquoise colored Larimar is mined only in the Dominican Republic.

Mystical Properties: Because it is mined in the Caribbean and because the coloring is reminiscent of an ocean, wearing Larimar Jewelry is considered highly relaxing and thought to induce feelings of peace and tranquility.

Larimar is thought to help with the Throat Chakra. Because the Thymus, a health regulating gland, sits in the throat, it is said to have general healing abilities. Larimar is thought to bring calm in communications and is sometimes mentioned as repairing a broken heart or in helping those transitioning out of a love affair.

Scientific Properties: Composed of a complex Sodium, Calcium Silicate, Pectolite (Larimar) is a secondary mineral created when water alters volcanic rocks. It is somewhat soft, being about (4.5 - 5.0 on the Moh's Hardness Scale), it can be scratched by a good knife. It also has a characteristic mottled or pillowy appearance.

Most gem grade Larimar comes from the Dominican Republic, however more mines seem to be coming on line--probably driven by the high price the gem commands.

Owner Warning! Larimar is somewhat soft and easily damaged by harsh cleaning fluids. Clean your Larimar jewelry with a soft Jeweler's Cloth.
