Because of the shiny, mirror surface, Obsidian Jewelry is attributed with the ability to reflect back to us our true selves--stripped of all self-delusion and wishful thinking. Because of this property, it is said to remove emotional blocks. Said to be a vision stone for use in vision quests and prophetic dreaming.

All Obsidian is considered extremely protective and said to allow no negative energy or negative spirit to enter. In the Middle Ages it was thought to drive out demons. Hence it is often used as a grounding stone for astral projection and psychics, in general, as it provides protection from negative or impish spirits. Sometimes referred to as the Wizard's Stone as it opens the gates to the netherworld, yet provides protection from misuse.

Apache Tears is teardrop shaped Obsidian named after the Trail of Tears in which the US Cavalry led Apache men from the caves across the desert and many perished. The Apache Tears are said to be the tears of their women.

A gemstone of the 1st Chakra, Obsidian is thought to provide protection, grounding and protection from negative self-image, especially with respect to our physical appearance. Especially helpful in times of grief.

Sometimes mentioned as being a remedy for snake poison.

Sometimes mentioned as a gemstone of Saturn, it is also mentioned as being a gemstone of Aquarius. The Apache Tear variety is said to be ruled by Aries.

Healing Properties: Grief. Depression.

Scientific Properties: Volcanic Glass of varying composition. Created when a volcanic flow is cooled instantly. Composed of very quickly cooled Granite or Rhyolite. Obsidian is hard, but brittle, fracturing concoidally, making it useful for fashioning into arrowheads and knives.

Relatively rare in a world-wide sense, Obsidian is only found where recent volcanic activity has occurred, as it tends to recrystallize rather quickly. Found in the Mexico and Western U.S. (but not the Eastern US). Important locales include Oregon and California. Hardness: 5+ on the Moh's hardness scale, but varies depending upon composition.
