Pietersite JewelryPietersite Jewelry

Rare and quite expensive in top grade, Pietersite (or Petersite, Tempeststone) is one of the newly discovered gemstones, first found by S.Pieters around 1960 in Namibia while farming his fields. Since then, another deposit has been discovered in China (1990's). The gemstone is always opaque, usually somewhat brown in color with hints of shimmery blue, red and gold. The color play is caused by Tiger Eye being twisted and turned in the Earth, so Pietersite will always be somewhat swirly in appearance.
Mystical Properties: Pietersite's swirly appearance is caused by the Earth twisting and breaking the rocks under enormous temperature and pressure. The resultant gemstone is both hard and beautiful. Life, too, can be very hard, full of pressure, twists and breakages. Many of us may eventually lose our courage. Therefore, wearing Pietersite Jewelry is said to help one remain open to the experiences of life. Pietersite is said to give us the strength to continue to live a full life, despite any problems we may have already faced.

Thought to provide grounding for those who must decide the fate of others. Thought to give us the wisdom to make good judgements.

Considered a gemstone of Aquarius and Saturn.

Said to help assimilate the energies of the 3rd (Navel), 5th (Throat) and 6th (Brow) Chakras.

Healing Properties: Thought to help with glandular disorders.

Scientific Properties: Pietersite is a gemstone caused by the metamorphosis of asbestos bearing rocks. Most of the asbestos is replaced by Brown and Blue Tiger Eye, causing the lovely color play (chatoyancy). This gemstone shows brecciation, in other words the rocks have been broken and folded.

Only two localities of this gemstone are known to date, one in Africa, discovered in the 1960's. This variety contains crocidolite. Another deposit is located in China. This deposit tends to be lighter in color. Found in Hunan China and Namibia Africa. Hardness: 7.0 on the Moh's Hardness Scale
