Red Jasper, Carnelian or red glass were engraved into something called a thet, in accordance with the instructions in the 156th Chapter of the Book of the Dead, and placed on the mummies neck.

Scientific Properties: Composed of Silicon Dioxide with Iron Oxide. The terms jasper, onyx, agate and chalcedony are largely interchangeable, however agates are usually more translucent and characteristically, have banding or patterns of some sort. Jaspers tend to be more colorful, more opaque and massive, lacking patterns.

Found commonly throughout the world, gem grade Red Jasper is mined in South Africa. 6 - 7 on the Moh's Hardness Scale.
