Serpentine is really a Family of Gemstones called
the Serpentinites that
grade into one another and can often make exact identification difficult. Serpentine gets its name
from the Latin, serpentis which means serpent rock and Serpentine is usually
some shade of
green.
Very often referred to as New Jade in the Gem World, Serpentine is NOT a true
Jade. Serpentines
characterisically are SOFT, easily carvable and have a fibrous or greasy luster.
