Spinel JewelrySpinel Jewelry

Spinel, in our humble opinion, is one of the best kept secrets in the gem world. Spinel is a multi-colored gemstone ranging from in color from clear to red, blue, green, yellow and purple. Spinels, which are fine rare gemstones in their own right--have long been mistaken for Rubies and Sapphires. Why? They occur together in nature, they're close in hardness, and they're about the same color. For some reason, Spinel seems to have taken a second seat. MORE...

** Information on this Gemstone **

Mystical Properties: Red Spinel or Ruby Spinel has often been mistaken for Ruby. The famous Black Prince's Ruby in the British Crown Jewels is actually a Spinel.

The Samarian Spinel is the largest known Spinel, blood red and more than 500 carats in the uncut state. It sits in an Iranian Museum and is part of the Iranian Crown Jewels. Legend says this large gemstone used to adorn the golden calf of the Bible, the calf that distracted the Israelites while Moses was gone receiving the Ten Commandments.

Esoterically, Spinel is thought to help us keep going through difficult times. We somehow manage to find the energy, both mental and physical to stay strong.

Spinel comes in many highly valued colors. The Red Spinel is called Ruby Spinel, the blue variety Sapphire Spinel. An orange-red, flame colored Spinel is called Rubicelle. Black Spinel is called Ceylonite or Pleonaste. Green Spinel is called Picotite.

The Rubicelle, or orange-red Spinel is said to be assigned to the Kshatriya Caste in India, one of the 4 castes (one below Brahmin).

Red Spinel is thought to help with bleeding/blood issues as well as curb an angry temperament. Red Spinel is most often associated with the planet Mars and the sign of Aries.

Thought to vibrate with the 1st Chakra (Root) and help us be strong and courageous in times of need.

Violet or purple Spinel is thought to activate the 7th 7th Chakra and help us become more spiritually in tune with the world and our God. Thought to facilitate Astral Projection and remove blockages to attempts.

Pink Spinel is said to help with self-love and let us have the courage to be our authentic selves and therefore, love and accept ourselves as we truly are.

Scientific Properties: Composed of a Magnesium, Aluminum Oxide. Spinel is created in high pressure metamorphic zones (along with Rubies), as well as in igneous rocks coming from great depth (mafic). When seen in nature the crystals characteristically form nice little octahedrons (box shaped crystals) and sometimes as twinned boxes, i.e., two boxes that look like they grew together (Spinel Twins). Pure Spinel is clear, but impurities often provide color: Chromium provides the red/pink, while iron provides blue coloring.

Occurs along with Rubies and Sapphires in the gem sand of Burma, Sri Lanka. Hardness is about 8 on the Moh's Hardness Scale.
