Topaz JewelryTopaz Jewelry

Long a gemstone of importance, naturally occuring Topaz is usually white or brown but can be heat treated and/or irradiated to be Blue or Pink. Blue/Pink Topaz is quite rare in nature, so expect to pay a pretty penny for natural Pink/Blue Topaz. Natural Imperial Topaz is a gorgeous golden color with hints of orange and red. Extremely rare and expensive, Imperial Topaz is still available but nearly mined out. The gemstone Topaz gets its name from the Red Sea Island, Topazin (Topasos). When in the market for Topaz, keep in mind, in general, the more intense the coloration, the more likely this gemstone has been treated.
Mystical Properties: A falcon carved into a Topaz is said to ensure the favor of powerful persons.

Many cultures believe wearing Topaz Jewelry will protect its wearer from greed.

Revelations states Topaz makes up the ninth level of the wall of the city of God, likened to the 12 apostles, this particular one to James the Lesser and thought to indicate prophecy.

The Hindus consider it one of the four lesser gems (uparatnani) and a gem of Jupiter.

Western Astrology associates Topaz with Scorpio, while Eastern Astrology associates the stone with Sagittarius and Pisces (both ruled by Jupiter). The Jeweler's call it the November Birthstone.

Blue Topaz is an important gemstone in subduing an over-active Throat Chakra. The yellow/tan variety of Topaz is considered important in subduing an overactive Naval Chakra.

Natural Healers use Topaz to cure depression, increase self-love and improve chances of success in endeavors.

Considered lucky for men named Thomas.

Considered a Gem of Autumn it is said to be lucky for those born in the 4th hour of the morning.

The traditional gift of the 16th Wedding Anniversary.

Healing Properties: Considered a warming gem, in the Middle Ages some thought Topaz could cure the plague. Thought to help with eye problems by dipping the stone in wine and rubbing the eyelids before bed. The darker varieties are thought to help with depression.

Scientific Properties: A nice, hard gemstone, Topaz is composed of Aluminum Hydroxyl-Fluorine Silicate. In ancient times, this stone was often confused with other yellow and green stones such as beryl, Citrine and Peridot/olivine.

Much of modern day Topaz comes from Brazil, Sri Lanka, Africa, Mexico and Maine, Utah and Colorado. Hardness: 8.0 on the Moh's Hardness Scale.
