Red Tourmaline: (Rubellite) is thought to instill courage and a strong will in the wearer. Protective.
Blue Tourmaline: (Indicolite) One of the rarer colors of Tourmaline, the most highly prized Tourmaline of all is Paraiba Blue Tourmaline. Esoterically, blue Tourmaline is considered a de-stresser and thought to promote sound sleep. Natural Healers consider this an important gemstone for 5th and 6th Chakras. Thought to help with intuition (6th Chakra) and eloquence in communication (5th Chakra).
Green Tourmaline: (Verdite) Also known as a Brazilian Emerald. This stone is thought to bring money and stimulate creative abilities. While Pink Tourmaline is thought to be feminine, Green Tourmaline is thought to vibrate with masculine energy. An important gemstone to Natural Healers, who think it opens a conduit for healing. Thought to help with indigestion.
Black Tourmaline (Shorl): Thought to be an excellent stabilizer and absorber of negative energy. Natural Healers consider this an important gemstone for subduing and over-active 1st Chakra. They consider it useful in dispelling negativity and providing powerful protection.
Watermelon Tourmaline: (Rubellite/Verdite/Elbaite) Very highly prized, this rare form of Tourmaline is thought to balance the male/female energies (and is not to be confused with Bi-color Tourmaline). Also for attracting love as Green and Pink are the colors that stimulate the Heart Chakra. Considered an important gemstone in subduing an over-active 6th Chakra. Natural Healers use Watermelon Tourmaline to heal the heart and emotions. Thought to reduce nervousness and anxiety.
Violet/Purple Tourmaline: (Siberite) inspires meditation.
Yellow Tourmaline(Tsilaisite) : Said to increase intelligence and bring optimism and good-cheer.
Colorless Tourmaline: (Achroite) is said to help attune to higher beings.
Brown Tourmaline(Dravite): Considered to have a stabilizing effect.
Tourmaline is considered a secondary gemstone for October Birthdays by Jewelers.
The gemstone of New England and New Englandites and Brazilians.
Considered lucky for men named Theodore.
Healing Properties: Blue varieties (Indicolite) are said to relieve stress. Green varieties (Verdelite) are said to speed general healing and help regain strength. Black Tourmaline is said to help clear the psyche of negative energy.
Scientific Properties: Tourmaline is composed of complex Borosilicates. Created in the earth at areas of tremendous pressure such as the collision of plate boundaries in southern California, this is a nice, tough gemstone. Tourmaline is used on high-pressure gauges in submarines as it can withstand great pressures. The brightly colored Tourmalines are often associated with Lithium.
In its natural, un-faceted state, Tourmaline crystals are characteristically long and thin, roughly triangular in midsection, and usually striated. It has pyro-electric properties (meaning when warmed it attracts and holds dust, ashes, small pieces of paper). Another unusual property of Tourmaline is, when viewed from the side, it appears more opaque, but when viewed through mid-section, appears clearer. This is called dichroism.
Found in Brazil, Connecticut, Maine, New York and California. The lower grade, cloudier Tourmaline typically come from Pakistan. Hardness: 7.0-7.5 on the Moh's Hardness Scale.
