Watermelon Tourmaline is the most highly prized of ALL Tourmaline varieties except perhaps, the exceptionally beautiful, rare and expensive Blue Paraiba Tourmaline. True Watermelon Tourmaline is just about impossible to find today and differs from bi-color tourmaline in that the core of the gem is pink or red ( Rubellite), while the outer surrounding rind is green ( Elbaite).

Scientific Properties: Composed of a complex Lithium bearing Borosilicate. All multi-colored (except Brown, Black) is called Elbaite by Geologists. Gemologists distinguish by coloration, calling Red or Pink Tourmaline Rubellite, and Green Tourmaline, Verdite.

Much tourmaline comes from Brazil, though it is still being mined in San Deigo County, CA and Maine. Hardness: 7.0-7.5 on the Moh's Hardness Scale.
