Zircon JewelryZircon Jewelry

Typically clear in color, Zircon is sometimes called Jargoon and is frequently used to inexpensively imitate diamonds. Cubic Zirconium, a synthetic Zircon, makes a great diamond substitute as Zircon is brilliant and quite hard. It takes an expert to distinguish between a diamond and a Cubic Zirconium. Very valuable are naturally occuring red, blue, orange, yellow and lesserly so, brown Zircon. Often called Jacinth or Hyacinth in ancient manuscripts. RETURN TO JEWELRY SECTION

Mystical Properties: In ancient texts, wearing Zircon Jewelry, often called Jacinth was especially important for those undergoing long travels as it was supposed to protect the wearer from lightning, robbery, bodily harm and the dreaded plague. It was supposed to have the special property of dulling in its sheen if the wearer or someone near to him was infected with disease. Rubbing the gem in a cross across food was said to expel demons when the person ate the food, so it is sometimes associated with repelling witchcraft.

Color variations of Zircon are given different properties:

Clear Zircon: Hindu Astrology considers white Zircon a secondary gem of Libra and Taurus.

Yellow Zircon: Said to attract love into your life.

Red Zircon: Supposed to bring money to its wearer and protect them from harm.

Orange Zircon: A protector of theft of property and personal violence. Also a secondary gemstone of Hindu Astrology for the Moon's North Node.

Blue Zircon: Help increase spirituality.

Green Zircon: Promotes healing and friendships.

Pink Zircon: Helps the gloomy count their blessings.

Purple Zircon: Increase prosperity.

Considered a December Birthstone by Jeweler's.

Christian tradition says Zircon (hyacinth) favors women named Helen and men named Herbert.

Revelations in the Bible says the 11th layer of heaven is built from Zircon. The church interpreted this as representing celestial rapture. These layers, so to speak were likened to the apostles, with Zircon (jacinth) assigned to Simon Zelotes, the Zealot.

Assigned to the hour of 1:00 p.m.

To dream of Zircon is a sure sign of success.

Healing Properties: Red Zircon is supposed to relieve pain and speed healing. Pink zircon is supposed to help depression.

Scientific Properties: Composed of Zirconium Silicate. Zircon contains small amounts (usually less than 4%) of radioactive thorium, uranium or hafnium, which make the gemstones mildly radioactive.

The adamantine (brilliant) luster of Zircon makes it a common substitute for Diamonds. While Zircon is quite hard, it is much softer than the hardest substance known to man (Diamond).

Zircon is a common mineral in river sands as it is slow to break down at the earth's surface. Gemstone quality Zircon is, of course, much rarer. 6.5-7.5 on the Moh's Hardness Scale.
